Positively Beautiful is a local organization providing free makeovers to women living with HIV/AIDS. T hrough makeup, hairstyling and fashion they help to erase identifying physical side effects of both the virus and the powerful medications necessary to keep the disease in check.

Founder Dr. Heather Moroso and her team of local hairstylists, fashion consultants, volunteers and generous business owners hold one-day events that include a great deal of pampering: makeovers, flowers, dinner and a photograph of the results.

(note: see http://www.tucsoncitizen.com/daily/local/46215.php for a story about their first event.)

With the success of their first local event behind them, the Positiv ely Beautiful team has scheduled two more; one is coming up in Tucson on March 10, then they are off to the State University of New York in May. SUNY is the home of one of the most decisive studies in the fight against HIV/AIDS: The Women’s Infant Transmission Study. Through this study and the advancement of treatment, transmission rates between mother and child are in sharp decline, and is now a virtual impossibility. The Tucson team will offer the mothers involved in transmission studies at SUNY a Positively Beautiful Mother’s Day Makeover.

To raise the funds to get the team to New York, Moroso has organized a full evening of downtown fun on Sunday, March 30. A silent art auction in the lobby of Hotel Congress (311 N. Congress) begins at 4:00 p.m. Denise Lane of the Spurloafers will entertain. Admission is free; anyone can place their bids on the many items donated by Tucson artists.

At 7:00 p.m. the energy goes up more than a notch as the big Club Congress stage features burlesque, female illusionists, drag queens, comedy routines and poignant skits with local entertainers Lucinda Holiday, Bunny Fu Fu, Ajia Simone, Janee Starr, Boys R Us and Homoneurotic in an over 21 show. Tickets are $15.00 and available at www.hotelcongress.com, or by calling 520-622-8848.

Dr. Moroso notes, “There is more to life than living with one label - HIV positive, in this case. The women we help are mothers, daughters, sisters, lovers, artists, professionals, grandmothers, fighters, wives, and women first. HIV/AIDS is not their identity and isn’t a death sentence anymore. We focus on living and these women are Positively Beautiful!”posbeautypostersmall.jpg
