Local chess nonprofit 9 Queens will join forces with hip hop artist RZA aka Bobby Digital to host the 9 Queens’ WuChess Fest- a free family chess festival at the Hotel Congress (www.hotelcongress.com) from 4-7 pm.  RZA-an avid chess player and the co-founder of online chess and hip hop community WuChess.com- will participate in the festivities before performing at the Rialto later that night.

The 9 Queens WuChess Fest will feature free activities for chess players and music fans of all ages and abilities including:

·         A “Knockout” single elimination speed chess tournament

·         Free chess lessons and puzzles provided by members of the Catalina Foothills Chess Team (two-time national chess champions)

·         Kids’ events including face painting, balloons and puzzles

·         Prizes, exhibitions and games

The 9 Queens WuChess Fest is the second free chess festival hosted by 9 Queens and the Hotel Congress as part of their campaign to promote chess in downtown Tucson.

“Chess is a perfect activity for downtown Tucson because it is fun, exciting and family friendly,” explains 9 Queens co-founder and executive director Jean Hoffman. “By combining the universal appeal of chess and music, we can make the benefits of chess more accessible to Tucsonans.”

In addition to hosting free chess events, 9 Queens also provides free chess instruction in low-income public schools and hosts free workshops for women and girls. WuChess.com is the first online chess and hip-hop network. WuChess promotes chess as a way to help children prepare for the future; a portion of Wuchess’ revenues support scholarships and outreach programs.

For more information on the 9 Queens WuChess Fest or to pre-register for the speed chess tournament visit www.9queens.org or email Jean Hoffman at jhoffman@9queens.org. Visit www.wuchess.com to create your own WuChess account.
